How to Download TikTok Drafts to Your Camera Roll

Drafts disappear when you reinstall TikTok or change phones. Here's how to get them into your camera roll first, and which method keeps the best quality.

Short answer: TikTok has no “download draft” button. To get a draft into your camera roll, either post it privately and save it from your profile, use the Save to device option while posting if your app has it, or screen record it. Do it soon. According to TikTok's help center, drafts can vanish when the app is reinstalled or the account moves to another device.

Where TikTok Drafts Live, and How You Lose Them

TikTok's help center says drafts are saved to the videos tab on your profile and are only visible to others once you post them. They're stored inside the app on that one phone, not in your account online. TikTok lists two situations where drafts may be removed:

  • TikTok is uninstalled and then reinstalled on the device.
  • The account is moved or switched to a different device.

Drafts also can't be shared or moved between accounts. So the camera roll is the only place a draft is truly safe.

Way 1: Post the Draft Privately, Then Save It

This works on every recent version of the app, on iPhone and Android.

  1. Go to your Profile and open Drafts.
  2. Pick the draft and tap through to the Post screen.
  3. Set who can watch it to Only you (also labelled Private), then post.
  4. Open the new video on your profile, tap Share (or the … button), then Save video.
  5. Once it's in your camera roll, you can delete the private post if you don't need it on TikTok.

Two things to know. A private post isn't shown to followers, so nobody is notified. But the copy saved this way normally carries the TikTok watermark, and because the post is private, a downloader site can't fetch a clean version for you.

Way 2: Use Save to Device While Posting

If your app version shows a Save to device switch on the post screen (often under More options), turn it on before posting the draft, privately or publicly. TikTok then writes the finished video, edits included, to your camera roll as it posts. The option isn't in every version, so check before relying on it.

Way 3: Screen Record the Draft

Open the draft, start your phone's screen recorder and play it through. It's quick and needs no posting, but the quality drops and the recording catches the app's on-screen controls. Trim and crop it afterwards. It's a good emergency backup when you're about to lose a draft and have no time for anything else.

Before You Reinstall TikTok or Switch Phones

  1. Open Drafts and count what's there.
  2. Save every draft you want to keep with Way 1 or Way 2.
  3. Check each one plays in your camera roll or gallery.
  4. Back up the camera roll (iCloud Photos, Google Photos or a computer) before wiping or trading in the old phone.
  5. Only then reinstall TikTok or log in on the new device.

Can a Downloader Website Save Your Drafts?

No, and any site that claims it can isn't being straight with you. A draft has no link and isn't on TikTok's servers in a public form, so there's nothing for a website to fetch. Downloaders like the TokVanta TikTok downloader work once a video is published publicly. If you post a former draft publicly, you can then save it without the watermark from its link.
